Determine Your Status
To confirm a trade name is in good standing:
- Go to the RI Trade Name Database
- Enter the trade name in the “Search by trade name” field, indicate whether you wish to search active or inactive trade name records, and click “Search”
- The following statuses may be noted in the search results and in a trade name’s summary screen:
- Active - An active trade name is in good standing with the RI Department of State.
- Involuntary Cancellation Notice - A 60-day notice was issued to the trade name owner(s) for failure to file an annual renewal or pay a required fee. View the filing details of the cancellation notice to learn more.
- Involuntarily Cancelled - An inactive trade name that failed to respond to a 60-day involuntary cancellation notice and was cancelled by the RI Department of State per R.I. Gen. Laws § 6-1-7. View the filing details of the involuntary cancellation to learn more.
- Cancelled - An inactive trade name that was voluntarily withdrawn because of a death of an owner, relocation, or simply because it is no longer conducting business. View the filing details of the withdrawal to learn more.
- Converted - An inactive trade name that changed its business structure by incorporating into an LLC, business corporation, limited partnership, limited liability partnership, or non-profit corporation. Search the RI Corporate Database to learn more.
