Maintain & Update Your RI Trade Name
Required Annual Filings
There are certain steps you must take each year to keep your business up-to-date, otherwise known as “in good standing.” State law requires that most trade names meet the following requirements each year.
File an Annual Renewal
All trade names must file an annual renewal with the RI Department of State.
Municipal Registration
Some municipalities require businesses operating in their jurisdiction to register each year.
Trade names that fail to meet these annual obligations will lose their good standing status and become involuntarily cancelled. The loss of good standing status can affect your ability to conduct business. Involuntarily cancelled trade names must file a restoration request to return to good standing. Involuntarily cancelled trade names that have been cancelled for more than one year cannot be restored if the trade name is no longer available.
Optional Filings
During the course of the year, you may need to update information, obtain certified evidence of your trade name registration, or secure permission from another state, local or federal agency to conduct business in Rhode Island. Unlike the requirements above, the following filings may be optional.
