Rhode Island Department of State Opens Nominations for 'Civic Education Teacher of the Year' Award
PROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore today announced that nominations are now open for the RI Department of State's fourth annual Civic Education Teacher of the Year award.?
The award will honor one outstanding teacher who has demonstrated a commitment to and expertise in teaching civics, social studies, or American government, with special consideration given to teachers who employ innovative teaching practices and experiential learning opportunities for their students. Nominations can be made by a current student, teaching colleague, or administrator.?
"History and civics teachers play an important role in ensuring our students understand our state and nation's histories, and as we approach our country's semiquincentennial anniversary, it's especially important to recognize those who carry on our stories," said Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore. "The Civic Education Teacher of the Year award is a great opportunity to honor an outstanding teacher in your life, and I strongly encourage students, teachers, and administrators to submit a nomination."
Since the award's creation, 30 Rhode Island teachers have been nominated. Previous winners include John Healy of E-Cubed Academy, Crystal Bozigian of North Providence High School, Shannon Gormley of Central High School, and most recently, Brandon Pearce of South Kingstown High School.
Nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m. on February 13, 2026 online at www.sos.ri.gov/teacheraward.
To be eligible, nominees must be current, full-time teachers of civics, social studies, or American government in grades 8–12.??
