Secretary Gorbea to Rhode Islanders: Check Your Mailbox and Help Maintain Voter Rolls

PROVIDENCE, RI - Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea is preparing a major mail campaign as part of her ongoing efforts to maintain the accuracy of our state's voter rolls while following strict voter protections under state and federal law.

The Department of State's Elections Division will send roughly 120,000 postcards to registered Rhode Island voters who did not vote in the past five calendar years or update their voter registration information during that time. Any mailings that are returned as "undeliverable" will mark that voter as inactive, starting the process of legally removing them from the rolls.

"I'm calling on any Rhode Islander who receives a mailing to follow the simple instructions on that card," said Secretary Gorbea. "If you receive a card for someone who no longer lives at that address, it is imperative that the card be returned to our office. Your participation is a critical part in helping us maintain accurate voter lists and protecting the integrity of every vote. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact my office."

Since taking office in 2015, Secretary Gorbea's efforts have led to the lawful removal of more than 124,000 people from Rhode Island's voter rolls. She also enrolled Rhode Island in the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), a multistate partnership that uses a sophisticated and secure data-matching tool to improve the accuracy and efficiency of state voter registration systems.

As a reminder, all Rhode Islanders are encouraged to check and update their voter information online at or visit their local board of canvassers.
