Description
Image of the Victory Parade in Providence held on May 11, 1919. After the armistice of November 11, 1918, a World War I Victory Parade took place in Exchange Place in Providence. In the center of the plaza was a Victory Arch, atop of which was a reproduction of the Hellenistic sculpture "Winged Victory of Samothrace (the Greek goddess Nike)." The inscription on the Victory Arch read: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO WENT FORTH AND RETURNED NOT WHOSE SOULS ARE MARCHING ON."
These images were taken from the Butler Exchange building (123 Westminster Street) from the 2nd floor doctor's office facing Exchange Place.
