Your letter of
The 9th inst. enclosing me a copy
of “Resolution of Thanks,” passed by
the Legislature of Rhode Island is
just received. – To their honorably
body, and the loyal people of the
state whom they represent through
you, I beg to return my thanks
and the thanks of the “Armies
of the Potomac” and James”, both of
which are honorably mentioned in
the “Resolution,” for this expression
of their satisfaction with the efforts
we have made in suppressing the
most wicked, as well as most gigantic
rebellion of which history gives any
record.
For the kind note with which
this “Resolution” is transmitted I return
you personally my sincere thanks.
