Glossary of Terms

Authority: The specific section of the law that allows a board or commission to exist. This "authority" will also describe the manner in which the board can operate and how the members can be appointed.
Designee: A person who has been authorized by an official who serves ex officio, or by virtue of his or her office, to serve in his or her place during an absence.
Engagement: Refers to the Certificate of Engagement, which is an oath to uphold the laws of Rhode Island and of the United States to the best of his or her ability.
Ex Officio: By virtue of the office that he or she holds.
Post: The position that a person holds on a particular board or commission.
Statutory: A member that sits on a board or commission by virtue of his or her office, as stated in the authority of that particular board or commission.
