Major Responsibilities
Our office has five divisions. Public Information gives you access to information about State House lobbying, upcoming and past meetings of state and local government, state boards and commissions, proposed state regulations and government consultants. Our Business Services Division maintains filings for active and inactive for-profit and nonprofit corporations, limited partnerships and limited liability companies. This division also administers the Uniform Commercial Code Program as well as registers Notaries, Trademarks and Games of Chance. The First Stop Business Information Center makes it easier to start or grow a business by creating free, customized packages that make it easier to apply for financing, obtain permits, make contacts and get answers from government at every level. Our Elections Division prepares ballots, certifies all federal and state candidates, encourages turnout and voter registration, maintains the state's voter registration database and publishes guides to running for office and voting. The State Archives is responsible for comprehensive archives and records management services for all public records in the state, including all state rules and regulations. The State Library provides reference and research services in the areas of law, legislation, government reports and Rhode Island history.
