Relating to Labor and Labor Relations - Fair Employment Practices

The General Assembly passed, and the Governor signed, legislation during the 2013 session known as “Ban the Box.” This law amends the Rhode Island Fair Employment Practices Act to prohibit employers from inquiring whether an applicant has been “convicted” (as defined by the Fair Employment Practices Act) of a crime before a first interview, either via an employment application or otherwise, subject to certain exceptions. The law becomes effective on January 1, 2014. Rhode Island Public Law.
